Tiralth, Quest for Freedom
The Port City of Aquileia has existed since the Kin Kingdoms that predated the Empire. Though before it was called Das’quelar, both cities have excelled at trade, fishing, and silk production. About a quarter of the Empire’s trade finds it’s way through the city’s docks, making it one of the richest and most important cities in the Empire, and certainly the most important city in the Coastal Provinces. As such, Aquileia is home to the Coastal Province’s military command, and houses no less than two Legion’s as well as an impressive Militia. It is considered by the enemies of the Empire the key to an invasion of the Empire, and the hardest location to take.
Due to the huge economic presence in the city, Slave trade is considered to be one of the largest earnings in the city. Though you must have a license for the selling of Slaves. Because of this, Aquileia has the largest population of Kin in the Empire, and quite possibly the known world. Over half the population (Not including the Legions stationed there) are Slaves, and 90% of those slaves are Kin. In the early days of the Empire this caused some trouble when the Kin in the city tried to rise up against the Empire. They were quickly put down, but the skeletons of the Kin leaders who lead the uprising can still be seen strapped to the tower in the center of town, where their bodies had been put on display. The grisly reminder to all Slaves the cost of rebellion and dissent in the Empire have been on display for over two hundred years.
Places of Interest
The Market_: Being that this is such a hub of trade in the empire, the Markey is almost always full of people buying and selling. Carts deliver and leave the Market regularly, adding horses to the mix and press of bodies in the Market. Here huge swath of the famed Imperial Silk can be seen on display, as well as mostly Kin being sold or serving the various merchants in the Marketplace.
S_enator’s Palace: One of the largest buildings in the City, the Palace is home to the Senator and his staff. It is here that the City Council Members meet and decide matters of state for their city and if to mobilize the Militia. Slaves come in and out at all hours performing the tasks required by their masters, as well as messengers trusted with information vital to the running of the city.
Housing District: Here is where those who have not earned the right of Citizenship live. They pay rent to Land Lords (Who are Citizens) and work in the various trades that keep the city running.
Temple District: Here the Temples reside as well as the residences of the various workers and holy people of the Temples, including the High Priests/Priestesses. There is even an old temple devoted, though abandoned devoted to the gods the Invaders brought with them. Though thanks to generations and shown powers of the gods of Tiralth, this is merely kept as a reminder of a place that will never be seen again. The primary Gods of the City of Aquileia are Jintar, Taranth, and Haruk, followed closely by Ishnara. Though all the gods (Save the forbidden and Evil) have Temples in the Temple District, those four have the largest and most prosperous temples in the District. It is of interest to note that the Temples of Ishnara and Tirdra do not keep slaves, and Slaves who manage to come to worship are treated equally.
Merchant’s Quarter: Though the Marketplace is a place of trading, it is also the place that the goods enter and leave the City. As such the populace goes to the Market District for more Mundane needs. Things to be found in the Merchant’s Quarter would be Food, Local Clothing, Blacksmith, and Alchemists.
Arcane District: Here the Colleges of magic reside as well as dormitories for the various students. It is also here that one can find Enchantments for various goods. The Empire values magicians, and as such the District is one of the cleanest (seconded only to the Temple District) in the city.
Citizen’s Quarter: Here the Land Owners own estates and vistas on clean well kept lawns. While not all who become citizens can live in the Quarter, the wealthy find their way here while running shops or going to the Marketplace to conduct their business. On the Outskirts resides the Arena that holds Weekly game, pitting Gladiators against each other and monsters. Adventurer’s can Volunteer, for a share of the winnings, to partake as teams against Gladiator’s or monsters kept by the Game Makers of the Arena.
Military Quarter: Here is where the vast majority of the members of the Legions reside as well as the City’s Armory and training grounds for new Legionnaires. The Command center for the Military is also located here, and from here there is a constant stream from the Senator’s Palace to the Command Center of Messengers and Officers going to meetings and keeping the Legion running smoothly. There is also a steady influx of Trade, to keep the Legion armed and fed.
